Restaurant News: Sun Prairie Monk's Bar and Grill to open Thursday
Wisconsin State Journal
Monk's Bar and Grill in Sun Prairie is opening to the public at 11 a.m. Thursday.
The franchise, at 2832 Prairie Lakes Drive, marks Monk's fifth location in its 67-year history.
It is franchisee Greg Frankov's second Monk's in Dane County. Frankov opened the first one in Middleton in 2011 across from Ruth's Chris Steak House.
Frankov said the 5,500-square-foot Sun Prairie Monk's will seat 215 people — 108 in the dining room, 107 in bar area and 60 outdoors.
The small, regional, sports-themed burger chain was founded by Helen and Gustave ‘Monk' Heineke in 1947 in the Wisconsin Dells. Tom and Jane Heller took it over in 1982.
The original Dells location is loaded with Badger memorabilia — in large part because the Heineke sons were UW-Madison football players in the 1950s.
There are also Monk's locations in Baraboo and at the Wilderness Resort in the Dells. Neither is owned by Frankov.
